It would seem that many Christians have no interest in theology or doctrine. They switch off when these matters are discussed. They are all the about the experience of Christianity and how it makes them feel. That they are saved and enjoying their salvation is all that interests them.

Christ spent a great deal of His’ life preaching and teaching. It makes sense therefore to describe Christians as learners in Christ’s school. Since Christ is no longer here in physical form, it is through the reading of His’ word and the preaching of His’ word that we learn the things we need to know.

That there is error in the church and false doctrines abroad in it makes a sound knowledge of God’s truth vital and obligatory. While we often fall into misunderstanding and mis-interperetation, this does not excuse us from  searching the scriptures, learning from sound books and hearing faithful preaching.

Not all of us are “bookish” and studious, but there is no excuse in the christian life  for being a “dunce’ in the things of God.

The shadow of the Almighty

It is very difficult to classify Christians. They are at very different stages and have so many highs and lows. In his’ exposition of Psalm 91 C.H.Spurgeon writes of two sorts of Christians.

the verse I am referring to runs thus,” He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1

Spurgeon says some people resort to the protection God gives in time of great need. They do not abide there and thus miss the blessing and spiritual growth. Those who do abide there get the full abundance of God’s presence and blessing.

Some talk of “Carnal” and “Spiritual” Christians. Others say a christian is a christian. There are those who make speaking in tongues and being “Spirit filled’, the mark of a true christian.

I would say that at the least we should all aspire to this abiding and dwelling with God. As Moses face shone when he came out of God’s presence ,although he did not know it, so the believer much in the presence of God will be blessed and a blessing.

Good examples

If there is one thing we are desperately short of it is good examples.

When I was little my favourite show was “Superman” with George Reeves. If ever there was a television  show that instilled good values on an impressionable child’s mind that was it. Good manners, honesty and the evils of crime were exemplified by this program.

Today it would be regarded as corny, but a lot of what was common decency is going by the board today.

In the higher realm there is no question Christ perfectly exemplified His’ teaching. The Christlike life is the highest anyone can aspire to. Yet it is only by Christ living in us that it is possible.
