As some may gather, I am a television and old film fan. One particular favourite is “Dad’s Army”. In the makeup of the platoon the stars get all of the attention and speech lines. There are 10 or 15 men in the background who do not get to say much if anything. Most do not even have names and have no acting expected of them at all.
I wonder if we are in danger of this in the larger churches and the mega churches. Members or “adherents”, who remain unknown in the background. Out of the limelight which shines on the “front” people. Unknown and unmissed when they leave.
Do we need a notice pinned on ourselves in church, ” My name is X will you be my friend”?
It is is true there are perennial fringe dwellers but even they should get to speak a line or two.
The Wrath of God
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them John 3:36
We are being told that” God is not mad at you”.
First of all this accuses God of “madness” which is a purely human trait and malady. It suggests an unreasoning passion which God can never be accused of.
The “Wrath ” of God is another thing. That God has anger and wrath is scriptural.
The second question is who are the advocates of this proposition speaking to. Unrepentant sinners? If so our text and many scriptures state that God’s judgment is suspended over their heads.
There is no doubt that it is their sin which angers God most. However as long as the love of sin and its pursuit dominate the sinner they remain under God’s just judgement and decreed penalty. They are hell bound, unless repentance and faith are planted in their hearts.
Are they speaking to believers? fallen back into sin. We should at least say that God is displeased with His’ erring children. Sin in believers is in some ways worse than the non believer. It is sinning against light, we know what sin is and what it cost to deal with it. It is a sin against love. We know the love of God in giving and Jesus in dying. To sin against this is heinous indeed. This deserves and receives a Father’s chastisement.
it is the more to the glory of His’ grace that we ,who even as christians, are sinful and wayward, that He never takes His’ merciful, loving kindness away from the Genuine believer.
As a young man Arthur Pink was a member of a cult called ” Theosophy”. His’ natural ability was recognized by the cults leaders and he was invited to meet the founder. Coming home from the meetings ,his’ father would speak to him and quote Bible verses. One such time the verse was Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.
This verse played on his’ mind and he spent days shut in his room, while his’ parents prayed. When he emerged His’ father exclaimed ” Praise God ,my son has been delivered”.
Later keeping a cult speaking engagement he made known the God of the Bible and a collective groan went up from the audience. (Condensed from Iain H. Murrays’s Life of A.W. Pink)
From that time forth he tirelessly served His’ redeemer and while he saw little fruit during his’ lifetime, after his’ death his’ written works circled the globe.
Never give up on your loved ones, our God is able.
